Payson Hikes

 

Before you begin any hike in the Payson area, please observe weather conditions. Temperatures will get really hot so you'll need to pack in a good supply of water. Also, it's important to cover your head to take your favorite hat or head gear and use appropriate sunscreens. Thunder storms may also arrive on short notice. This type of weather can bring heavy rain, lightning strikes, loud thunder and winds. Take time to take the necessary precautions for a safe hike through this rugged and beautiful area.

KNOB MOUNTAIN LOOP
This is a strenous hike that takes you a little over 18 miles to complete. You will traverse Knob Mountain by starting at the East Verde River. This loop hike will take you through the north end of the Mazatzal Mountains. Your elevation will be rising by 2800 as you work your way through the pine forests.

NORTH PEAK
Another trip through the Mazatzal Mountains here. This trail is rated strenuous and will take most of your day. During the 7 mile journey you will gain over 3400 feet at one point. It takes you to the top of North Peak which is not climbed regularly.

HORTON CREEK TRAIL
Here is an easy journey that you'll enjoy as you travel along a trout stream. It's 6.8 miles in length is an out and back trip. The elevation gain is just about 1200 feet.

TUNNEL TRAIL
This out and back jaunt is a very easy hike. It's only a mile and half long off the Mogollon Rim. There's not much of an eleveation gain so this hike won't make you work that hard.
